CHAPTER 19
Mr. Darcy had been relieved to find Georgiana scarcely any different, except for seeming a little more confident and perhaps being slightly taller. He was pleased to see so much affection between her and his future wife, and the reluctance of their parting was delightful. This charming scene made it clear that his marriage would be a source of happiness for Georgiana, which was important to him. More than that, he could see that Elizabeth was going to be a good influence on her.
It had been wonderful to see his sister becoming more open, and she had even ventured to make a little joke of her own. The idea of spending many more hours in such merriment made Mr. Darcy feel glad that he had proposed to Elizabeth. Although often serious, he was not without a sense of humour, and it had lately been growing, encouraged by the banter and lighthearted conversations which he had been enjoying with her. She was a good influence on him as well, and away from her family, he found it easy to view his upcoming marriage in a very positive light.
But now he was going to meet Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner. Although Elizabeth had given him some cause to believe that they were not objectionable, he was still dubious. As they returned to the carriage, he felt a renewal of the discomfort which had vanished in the past few hours. It was just a couple of weeks ago in his mind that he had spoken to Mr. Bingley about the ineligibility of anybody who had connections in Cheapside.
In giving the direction to his coachman, he felt embarrassed. They never went into that part of London. Although his servant showed no reaction, he was certain that the man was astonished. But then he remembered being told that he had been there before. This was not his first foray into Cheapside; however, it was all new to him. Upon reaching their destination, he alighted from the carriage apprehensively, but only saw a tidy street and respectable buildings which were not so very different from those in more fashionable parts of London.
They were admitted by a very mannerly servant and entered into a drawing room which was stylishly furnished. It appeared that Mrs. Gardiner had good taste. This was reflected in her own appearance, and also in her manner. She greeted them warmly and offered her congratulations on the engagement with none of the exclamations and excess emotions which made Longbourn so uncomfortable. Mr. Darcy was much impressed by this evidence of good sense and excellent manners.
Mr. Gardiner greeted him in a similar way, but with the addition of a slight degree of familiarity, just as much as was justified by their having spent a morning fishing together. He mentioned that occasion as a particular highlight of his holiday, and the two of them were soon talking about fishing in general. Although he was trying to avoid any specifics of that day, Mr. Darcy felt so
